RQ update on Bundaberg Greys
The Bundaberg Greyhound Racing Club has advised Racing Queensland of its desire to convert its racing surface to a sand circle track following a member vote on January 31.
Late last month, RQ announced that meetings would no longer be programmed on Bundaberg’s current two-turn grass track, citing the unsuitability of racing on a circular grass surface.
The State Government has committed to conducting a comprehensive review into Queensland’s racing industry this year. It will focus on the long-term viability of all codes and venues across the state.
The review will consider all options, including RQ’s previously announced circle sand track conversion.
In the short-term, RQ has agreed to enhance and implement a range of measures to assist participants whilst meetings are not being programmed in Bundaberg. They include:
- Bundaberg trainers participating at other Queensland venues will continue to receive a travel subsidy of $120 per travelling trainer;
- Additional race meetings have been programmed for Rockhampton;
- For trainers who are unable to travel to race meetings, RQ will provide a $40 per week support payment for each licensed greyhound in their care to assist with their upkeep for a three-month period, commencing Monday, February 17. Participants who meet the eligibility requirement must apply in writing to RQ through the official application form here;
- RQ will provide club funding and licensing in line with its standard terms and conditions; and
- RQ is proactively working with the Greyhound Adoption Program for owners and trainers requiring assistance in rehoming their animals. Participants can make expressions of interest through GAP here.
Whilst further rehoming information will be provided soon, more information on retiring greyhounds can be found here:
