SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS:
From QTC, 19.9.09
Stewards today continued an inquiry into the reason for M. Hellyer being dislodged from STRAWBERRY RIPPLE near the 400m in race 1 at the above meeting. The inquiry was adjourned to enable M. Hellyer to provide evidence after he was transported to the Royal Brisbane Hospital for observation. After hearing evidence today from M. Heller, together with evidence from S. Katsidis, M. Cahill and S. Seamer it was established that M. Hellyer became unbalanced in the saddle near the 400m and as a result of losing his balance was dislodged. No blame could be attributed to any horse or rider.
As L. Rolls was injured, riding changes were made as per the Stewards Summary Sheet.
Race 1: Fujitsu F & M Maiden H’cap – 1200m
1st – Flaxen Belle 2nd – Seasons End 3rd – Sunshine Lass 4th –Tickle The Kitty
The start of this race was delayed when J. Byrne was dislodged from RED DAWN behind the barrier stalls. J. Byrne was examined by the ambulance officers and was cleared to fulfil his engagement.
PAPER TIGRESS (M. Helyer) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
SEASONS END (L. Cassidy) was slow to begin.
HALLSIDE MAGIC (M. Speers) jumped away awkwardly.
HALLSIDE MAGIC commenced to overrace near the 1000m and continued to race ungenerously, obliging its rider to allow it to improve around the field to the leading position near the 600m.
Approaching the 800m, LA FILLE DU ROI (M. Cahill) had to be steadied when tightened for room by PINK SAPPHIRE (G. Colless), which shifted in. PAPER TIGRESS, which was following, also had to be steadied as a consequence. LA FILLE DU ROI then overraced at the heels of SEASONS END until near the 600m.
L. Cassidy, rider of SEASONS END, was reprimanded under 137A(5)(i) for using his whip in successive strides before the 100m. AR137A(5)(ii). L. Cassidy was also reprimanded for using his whip on 6 occasions before the 100m.
A post race veterinary examination of PAPER TIGRESS failed to reveal any abnormalities.
Race 2: Glenlogan CG&E Maiden H’cap - 1200m
1st –Rokatoko 2nd – Big Boori 3rd – Cotham 4th – Cullinan Diamond
On return to scale a protest was lodged by S. Galloway, rider of the 3rd placegetter, COTHAM, against BIG BOORI being declared the 2nd placegetter, alleging interference over the concluding stages of the race. It was established that BIG BOORI did shift in and brush COTHAM over the concluding stages, however stewards could not be satisfied that this incident materially affected the result of the race, bearing in mind the proximity of the incident to the finish line and therefore dismissed the objection and correct weight was semaphored on the Judge’s placings.
The start of this race was delayed when BIG BOORI took charge of its rider behind the barriers and galloped back up the 1600m chute. The horse was examined by the club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to start. Trainer M. Thexton was advised that a warning was being placed on the horse in regards to its pre-race behaviour.
COTHAM (S. Galloway) jumped away awkwardly and lost ground.
ROMONE (P. Hammersley) and ALANDY LAD (A. Pattillo) bumped on jumping away.
IMA REDNECK (M. Cahill) raced 3 deep throughout.
Stewards sought an explanation from S. Galloway regarding his riding of COTHAM approaching and rounding the home turn. S. Galloway explained that he was positioned behind one of the more fancied runners in BIG BOORI and he felt it was in the horse’s best interests not to attempt to make ground around IMA REDNECK when it raced 3 wide as he was of the opinion that BIG BOORI upon straightening would move IMA REDNECK wider on the track, resulting in him being forced to cover extra ground. S. Galloway added that he felt it was in the horse’s best interests to wait until the home turn and attempt to position his horse into a run to the inside of BIG BOORI. The explanation was noted.
Race 3: Darley Australia CG&E Class 3 H’cap - 1110m
1st – Liger 2nd – Seventh Heart 3rd – Lindys Cross 4th – Centennial Son

CRYSTAL ROCKET (A. Spinks) was momentarily tightened for room rounding the home turn between GRANDIVA (M. Cahill) and JESTER RUMBLE (M. Hellyer), which shifted out slightly when weakening.
M. Cahill, rider of GRANDIVA, reported that the mare did not begin the best today and whilst it usually takes up a position worse than midfield, he was obliged to restrain the horse back to last in order to take a position closer to the fence. M. Cahill added that, in his opinion, GRANDIVA finished the race off only fairly over the concluding stages.
Race 5: Metro Tiles Class 5 H’cap - 1650m
1st –Our Scooby Doo 2nd – Gee Whiz 3rd – Fat Possum 4th – Derry City

SHEEZA DRAMA (A. Pattillo) commenced to race very fiercely near the 1200m and on several occasions had to be restrained off the heels of SIMIAN EXPRESS. SHEEZA DRAMA, when restrained, shifted out, making contact with MIO CAVALLO (C. Reith). JENNABEE (J. Taylor), which was racing behind MIO CAVALLO, was hampered as a consequence. Trainer C. Williamson was advised that a warning was being placed on SHEEZA DRAMA regarding its racing manners.
ICE DELIGHT (M. Speers) overraced when racing wide.
Apprentice J. Wood, rider of BLOOMIN THUNDER, pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding, in that near the 200m he permitted his mount to shift out when insufficiently clear of SWEET MARIE (A. Spinks), resulting in that horse having to be checked to avoid the heels of BLOOMIN THUNDER. SIMIAN EXPRESS (V. Schubert), which was racing to the outside of BLOOMIN THUNDER, also had to be steadied to avoid the heels of that horse which continued to shift out. J .Wood was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 meetings, to commence at midnight, 11 October and to expire at midnight, 24 October 2009.
Race 7: The Good Guys CG&E Class 4 H’cap
1st – Athenas Gift 2nd – General Purple 3rd – Tightrope 4th -Radetsky
BURNETT DANCER was declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 3.20 pm.
S. Galloway who was dislodged from GENERAL PURPLE when proceeding to the barriers, was examined by the club doctor and cleared to fulfil his engagement.
ELSQUARE (P. Hammersley) and ATHENAS GIFT (D. Browne) had to be checked at the start when tightened for room between PATMOSS (K. Sawyers), which was taken in by RADETSKY (M. Hellyer) and FIELDING (A. Merritt), which shifted out abruptly on jumping away.
Near the 900m, the saddle on FIELDING slipped forward, placing its rider at a disadvantage and resulting in the rider having to retire FIELDING from the event after entering the home straight.
Passing the 300m, ELSQUARE had to be steadied when momentarily tightened for room between CAPE CHIVAS (J. Bowditch) and THE BEAST, which shifted out.
When questioned regarding the seemingly disappointing performance of THE BEAST, O. Turpin stated that when attempting to position the horse one off the fence outside FIELDING near the 800m, it was evident to him that the saddle had shifted on that horse and in the interests of the rider of FIELDING he shifted out to a 3 wide position to allow the horse to come to the outside of the heels of RADETSKY. O. Turpin stated that whilst THE BEAST overraced in the middle stages, he was disappointed in the horse’s finishing effort. Trainer A. Bailey stated that the horse worked well subsequent to its last win and, in his opinion, THE BEAST races best when leading and advised stewards that the horse turned in a similar performance at Doomben on 25 September.
