GENERAL
Due to several meetings being abandoned, today’s race start times were amended as per below:
Race 1 – 1.23pm
Race 2 – 1.58pm
Race 3 – 2.33pm
Race 4 – 3.08pm
Race 5 – 3.47pm
Race 6 – 4.27pm
Race 7 – 5.10pm
Stewards approved the following overweight allowances at today's meeting:
Race 2 – SPEITHTACULAR – B. Lerena +0.5kg (56kg)
Race 4 – WINSTON BLUE – M. Hellyer +1kg (55kg)
Race 4 – JUSTICE SERVED – A. Thompson +0.5kg (57.5kg)
Whilst doing the preliminary check of the track, Stewards identified an issue with the crossing and the surrounding areas of it where surface water was laying. Remedial work was carried out, along with a partial grooming of the track prior to the running of race 1.
Race 1: KB SEAFOOD QTIS TWO-YEARS-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1200M
The start of this race was delayed approximately 3 minutes when BLINDING SPEED and VERONA AFFAIR proved a little difficult to load.
CAT CALL – Rider B. Thornton reported the colt laid out from the 800m.
ALKEBULAN – Raced wide throughout.
LIFT'N'MEHIGHER – Began awkwardly.
Race 2: HUON CAVIAR MAIDEN PLATE 1050M
BEAUTY EIGHT (NZ) – Began awkwardly. Inclined to lay in under pressure in the home straight.
REMOMIA – Near the 800m, momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of SPIETHTACULAR (B. Lerena), which shifted in when not clear. Rider B. Lerena was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident. Apprentice R. Thorburn dropped his whip near the 200m.
SIGNATURE TART – Slow to begin. Near the 800m, shifted in after being steadied from the heels of REMOMIA, which was taken out by VERSION, which shifted out. Hung out from the 500m until entering the home straight.
SPIETHTACULAR – Began awkwardly.
Race 3: BLUE WAVE KB SEAFOOD MAIDEN PLATE 1540M
The start of this race was delayed approximately 10minutes when DENUTO reared up, spun around on entering the track, dislodged rider Ryan Wiggins and galloped riderless for some distance. DENUTO was declared a late scratching at 2:31pm. Upon the declaration of correct weight, Stewards ordered that all monies invested on DENUTO be refunded with the following deductions to apply:
1st place – 58c the win, 45c the place
2nd place – 56c the place
Trainer’s representative M. Jupp was advised a warning would be placed on the pre-race manners of DENUTO. Ms Jupp advised the stables were giving thought to starting the gelding tomorrow, and on this advice, was notified a veterinary clearance would be required if this was to occur.
MACEDONIAN (NZ) – Raced keenly in the early stages.
SUMICH – Slow to leave the gates and then began awkwardly. Trainer M. Wilson was advised a warning would be placed on the gelding.
CRIMSON SPIRIT – Raced keenly in the early stages.
HUMID– Raced keenly in the middle stages. Apprentice J. Williams could offer no explanation for the poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities. Subsequent to the race, apprentice J. Williams reported the filly, in his view, had been kicked by another runner behind the gates, adding that he believed he had made this known to Officials behind the gates. After consulting with the Official Veterinarian and Starter, neither stated that they had been made aware of the situation.
Race 4: THE PACIFIC WEST BM62 HANDICAP 2000M
The start of this race was delayed approximately 2 minutes due to the delay in the previous race.
AUTUNNO – Laid out approaching and rounding the home turn. Rider J. Murphy advised it was his intention to settle in rearward position, however; after being caught wide in the early and was unable to find a suitable position, he allowed the gelding to stride to take up a forward position.
JUSTICE SERVED – In special circumstances, Stewards permitted rider A. Thompson to ride the gelding 0.5kg overweight due to his gear being saturated and the limited available time until the next race.
FORUM ONE – Slow to begin. Rider N. Tomizawa dropped his whip near the 200m.
PENDING – Began awkwardly. Apprentice J. Williams reported the gelding was not suited to racing on the synthetic surface.
SPANISH FIGHTER – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
Race 5: SALMON STALLION BM65 HANDICAP 1540M
VIADELAMORE (IRE) – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
KAREEM – Held up behind HULKAMANIA and to the inside of VIADELAMORE from the 600m until passing the 500m.
HAMILTON BROWN – Near the 300m, momentarily held up for a run between ALL ABOUT ARTIE and HULKAMANIA before shifting in across the heels of ALL ABOUT ARTIE to obtain clear running.
BUN IN THE OVEN – Over raced in the early and middle stages.
Race 6: THE LUMP BM62 HANDICAP 1050M
BATTLE OF VIENNA – Knuckled on jumping.
TE PANI – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.
GRAND CRUSADER – Raced wide throughout. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice J. Williams was reprimanded pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(i) for using the whip on consecutive strides prior to the 100m.
PANGAEA – Near the 500m, when racing in visors for the first time and tight to the inside of BATTLE OF VIENNA(N. Callow), became unbalanced and lost its position. On questioning the riders involved, E. Chaves (PANGAEA) explained his mount’s racing manners contributed greatly to the incident, however; N. Callow was advised to exercise greater care in similar circumstances.
RUSSIAN DIVA – Slow to begin. Raced wide throughout.
REIGN OF POWER – Change of tactics, to be further forward. Began awkwardly and settled towards the rear of the field.
ICY ISEA – Cast its near-hind plate in the mounting enclosure and on arrival at the barriers was unable to be refitted. Stewards gave permission for the off-hind plate to be removed and the mare to race bare behind. Slow to begin.
Race 7: VALE MAUREEN CHILDS (CHOOKIE) OPEN HANDICAP 1050M
AT WITZ END – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
DALAVIN – Slow to begin. Near the 50m, momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of AT WITZ END (K. Matheson), which shifted in under pressure. Rider K. Matheson was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident.
LA AMIGO – Laid in passing the 1000m onto the hindquarters of MY ELOISE, which became unbalanced, when momentarily racing tight to the inside of SONNY DAZE. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
MY ELOISE – Near the 1000m, bumped on the hindquarters by LA AMIGO and became unbalanced.
KRAKARIB – Laid in under pressure in the home straight.
SONNY DAZE – Approaching the 300m, momentarily steadied to avoid the heels of LA AMIGO (R. Thorburn), which shifted in under pressure. Apprentice R. Thorburn was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a) for this incident.
