WEATHER - FINE TRACK - GOOD RAIL - 7M. 1600-700, 8M REMAINDER
GENERAL: FROM QPC OFFICES, 1.6.99
After inquiring into a complaint lodged by trainer J. W. Duke against apprentice M. Gray in relation to an incident at the Deagon track on 18 May, M. Gray was found guilty of a charge of misconduct under A.R.83(c) in that on the above date he did raise his voice in making an obscene statement in the direction of the Course Ranger, Mr G. Mahwinney. M. Gray was fined $500. In accordance with Local Rule 36, stewards ordered that $300 of that fine be suspended on the basis that M. Gray does not breach the same or any rule of a similar nature within a period of 6 months from the date of the imposition of the penalty.

An inquiry was concluded into a report lodged by Betting Supervisor Mr I. Black in relation to the prices displayed by L. Gallagher close to the starting time for each race at the above meeting. Stewards took no action against Mr Gallagher, however he was advised he must not leave his stand until the starting signal has been given.
RACE 1: PETER LEHMANN WINES H’CAP - 1350M.
ASTUTE BAMBINO was slow to begin.
ORLANDO, which bled during the event, will incur the mandatory 3 month ban from racing.
Stewards questioned trainer G. Little’s representative Mrs S. Little as to the action of the filly NATISM LADY. Also questioned was jockey J. Felix. Stewards advised Miss Little that they had concerns with that filly’s near fore action and would monitor her performances in the future.
RACE 2: COOPERS ALE H’CAP - 1350M.
PRINCE OF ALMS pulled hard in the middle stages.
RACE 3: ANGAS BRUT PREMIUM CUVEE H’CAP - 1000M.
CANADIAN SHIELD was slow to begin.
CLEISH jumped away awkwardly and shifted in, inconveniencing FINAL HIT.
For some distance passing the 600m., WE SHALL DANCE had to be restrained off the heels of SON O’ GUNDY.
Near the 200m., ROYAL CANNON shifted in abruptly under pressure, causing KIRKDALE ROAD to be checked when taken on to the heels of CANADIAN SHIELD.
ROCKY’S KINGDOM was unable to obtain clear running over the final 100m..
Near the 100m., WE SHALL DANCE was accidentally struck over the head by the whip of M. Carson, rider of MIMICAL.
RACE 4: OXFORD LANDING ESTATE SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKES H’CAP - 1100 M.
M. Paget was fined $25 for weighing out with the wrong saddle cloth number.
QUICK SILVER KATE jumped away awkwardly and brushed the starting gate and then shifted out and made contact with GOLD RIDGE, which resulted in D. Green becoming unbalanced. As a consequence, D. Green was dislodged from QUICK SILVER KATE. D. Green was then able to restrain the filly and retired it from the event.
MADAME CHINOIS shifted out at the start and as a result hampered PRIDE AND POWER, CARELESS COMPOSER and STRINGALONG.
Near the 900m., STRINGALONG had to be steadied when tightened for room between CARELESS COMPOSER and GOLD RIDGE, which shifted in. M. Paget, rider of GOLD RIDGE, was advised to exercise more care in future.
Over the concluding stages, SWIRLER was inclined to lay in under pressure, which prevented M. Privato from fully testing his mount.
A veterinary examination of PEACENIK, which finished a distant last, failed to reveal any abnormality.
RACE 5: LANGS SCOTCH B.I.S. SUPER QRIS ADDED STAKED H’CAP - 1100M.
Trainer R. Baker was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for BRIDLING by the prescribed time.
The off-side pacifier cup on FAVOUR THE BRAVE, which was damaged in the barriers, was removed prior to the start being effected.
BRIDLING was slow to begin.
Near the 800m., WINGS AWAY, which was racing greenly, shifted out, forcing FRENCH CREST out across the heels of PORT CALL.
SUPREME ECHO was forced to race wide in the early and middle stages.
At the 700m., FRISKY STAR had to be steadied to avoid the heels of WINGS AWAY, which shifted in slightly.
Leaving the 500m., PRECIFIC shifted in, tightening the running of FAVOUR THE BRAVE. PRECIFIC and FRENCH CREST were then tightened for room between SUPREME ECHO, which shifted in, and FAVOUR THE BRAVE, which shifted out after brushing the rail.
Close to the line, FRISKY STAR was tightened for room between FAVOUR THE BRAVE and PORT CALL, which was taken out slightly by KING CAL.
P. Wolfgram and trainer J. Fitzgerald were questioned regarding P. Wolfgram’s handling of FRISKY STAR from the 400m.. P. Wolfgram stated that prior to the 400m. he was racing on the heels of WINGS AWAY and had elected to shift out, and on entering the straight angled for a run to the inside. P. Wolfgram added that he had ridden FRISKY STAR out to the best of his ability and had been tightened for room close to the line. Trainer J. Fitzgerald advised that at its previous start, FRISKY STAR had been slowly away, then ridden hard before compounding over the concluding stages at Caloundra on 17 May when racing on a slow track. He stated he had instructed P. Wolfgram today to ride the horse back in the field. Mr Fitzgerald advised that he was satisfied with the ride of P. Wolfgram. Whilst stewards acknowledged his mount raced in restricted room over the concluding stages, P. Wolfgram was nevertheless severely reprimanded for what they deemed to be his lack of vigour on FRISKY STAR in the early stages of the straight.
RACE 6: THE ANTIPODEAN COMPANY H’CAP - 1100M.
RED ZEPHYR, which was slowly away, was checked shortly after when ALWAYS IRISH jumped away awkwardly and shifted in.
Near the 650m., ALWAYS IRISH had to be restrained off the heels of CHIEF OF DREAMS.
RACE 7: CHRISTOBEL’S CLASSIC H’CAP - 1520M.
Apprentice S. Nolen was fined $50 for failing to claim his full allowance on CALLING.
At the entrance to the straight, TRIST OF FATE had to be steadied off the heels of SEABAS. TRIST OF FATE then had difficulty obtaining clear running until near the 100m..
RACE 8: YALUMBA H’CAP - 1666M.
BLEU ESPION blundered on jumping away and then knuckled, dislodging D. Hayse.
Making the first turn, the riderless BLEU ESPION struck the heels of SPY MISSION and shifted out, hampering POCKET MY PRIDE.
Near the 1200m., BLEU ESPION shifted out, forcing SPY MISSION wider on the track.
At the 500m., VITA MAN shifted out and made contact with ‘TIS LOVE.
Approaching the home turn, BLAZING TAAN had to be steadied off the heels of the tiring LITTLE ROB.
The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that BLEU ESPION was found to have sustained a small laceration to the inside heel on the near foreleg, and that SPY MISSION had sustained a very small lacerations to the outside of the off hind fetlock and hock.
RACE 9: SAMUEL SMITH & SON H’CAP - 1200M.
Trainer B. Baldwin was fined $50 for failing to declare a rider for MA CARDINE by the prescribed time.
Near the 450m., MA CARDINE had to be checked when tightened for room by VANDAM STREET, which shifted in and away from IMPERIAL ORDER. A short distance later, IMPERIAL ORDER had to be restrained off the heels of NO SHOW.
At the entrance to the straight, IMPERIAL ORDER shifted out abruptly to obtain clear running and in doing so hampered CHAGATAI.
Trainer C. Brown was questioned as to the instructions given to J. Byrne on VANDAM STREET. Mr Brown stated that he had advised J. Byrne that from the wide barrier to ease the colt and find a position close to the fence and then ride the horse for luck in the straight. J. Byrne confirmed the instructions and stated that from the 400m. there was no opportunity to improve without being forced extremely wide, and that immediately upon entering the straight when PRINCE LENNOX shifted out, he attempted a run between that colt and MORE STYLISH which quickly closed. He added he was then unable to gain clear running for the remainder of the event. The explanations were accepted. The club’s veterinary surgeon reported that VANDAM STREET had pulled up distressed with a rapid irregular heart rate.
ALL WINNERS AND ORLANDO WERE SENT TO BE SWABBED.
