STEWARDS REPORT

MAREEBA TURF CLUB

SATURDAY 29th MARCH 2025

WEATHER – Overcast TRACK RATING – Heavy (8) RAIL – TRUE PENETROMETER – N/A

OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – A. Holzhauser
Stewards – P. Gillard & S. Copelin

GENERAL

The following runners which had not raced for an extended period underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and were cleared to start BOOM SEE & SWEET CANDY.

Due to Atherton track being deemed unsuitable for racing, this meeting was conducted at the Mareeba Turf Club which required minor distance amendments.

As jockey G. Kliese was not riding at today’s meeting he was replaced as per Raceday Stewards Summary.

When asked to explain the reason for STATS and TYCOON BEAU being scratched from Race 2 WATTO’S EARTHMOVING & MACHINERY OPEN PLATE 1210 Metres on today’s program trainer Mr S. Massingham stated he had full intentions of both horses competing and had engaged riders accordingly however when the weather had not improved and the forecast for further rain to continue and also learning that the race meeting was being transferred from Atherton to Mareeba he was not comfortable starting the horses on the heavy surface of that track. His explanation was noted.
Race 1: TOLGA LIONS CLUB BENCHMARK 50 HANDICAP – 1210 METRES

WISHNOWSKY – Shifted in at the start bumping DESERT GRIT and then shifted out bumping EXCITE CHOO.

DESERT GRIT – Bumped on jumping. Raced wide for the majority of the race.

EXCITE CHOO – Bumped on jumping.

FIVE BULLS – Raced wide for the majority of the race.

Following the running of this race, all remaining races were brought forward due to the weather forecast of possible thunderstorms and further rain being predicted.

Race 2: WATTO'S EARTHMOVING & MACHINERY OPEN PLATE – 1210 METRES

STRATEGIST – Stewards considered an objection lodged by Ms A Thomson the rider of STRATEGIST which finished 3rd against SPIRIT MEISTER (App Ms B. Youngberry) being declared second, on the grounds of interference over the concluding stages. It was established that leaving the 100 metres SPIRT MEISTER shifted in under riding bumping STRATEGIST which was forced inwards behind the heels of GULF OF LION and then continuing to brush that runner over the concluding stages and impeding the rider A Thomson (STRATEGIST). The stewards were of the opinion that the degree of interference suffered by STRATEGIST exceeded the margin between the two horses at the finish and therefore they upheld the objection and amended the placings to read:- 1ST GULF OF LION, 2ND STRATEGIST, 3RD SPIRIT MEISTER. Apprentice B. Youngberry was advised to show greater care in similar circumstances.
MISSILE THUNDER – When questioned in regard to the gelding’s performance trainer F. Wieland advised it had had an interrupted preparation leading into the race today due to recent weather events and limiting his normal training pattern. Mr Wieland advised MISSILE THUNDER was first up over 1200 metres which was not ideal however he agreed with jockey C. Meehan that the gelding was not comfortable in the conditions. Mr Wieland further added the gelding had not performed well previously when first up from a spell. Jockey C. Meehan advised MISSILE THUNDER travelled well in the early stages however struggled in the heavy conditions leaving the 600 metres and for this reason did not put undue pressure on it over the concluding stages. He further added MISSILE THUNDER felt well in its action on returning to scale. Stewards noted their explanations. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant observations.
Race 3: CENTRAL TYRES MAGIC MILLIONS/ROB KOCH MEMORIAL/FNQ UP & COMING STAYERS BENCHMARK 55 HANDICAP – 1500 METRES
GRINZINGER BURG (NZ) – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding its improved performance trainer L. Terzi advised stewards that the step in distance today was beneficial as she was of the opinion it was better suited to longer distance to what it had been racing over. Stewards noted her explanation.

OLD SALT – Over-raced in the early and middle stages. Compounded in the home straight. Co Trainer P. Rowe advised in his opinion the gelding will benefit from today’s race and would drop the horse back in distance for its next start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant abnormalities.

MISHANI BURN – Raced wide without cover for the majority of the race. When questioned into the tactics today rider R. Shred stated that her instructions were to ride it in a forward position however after improving forward was unable to obtain to lead when the pace quickened inside her and she was then obliged to race wide. She also stated it was its first start for close to 8 weeks. Trainer A. Malliff confirmed the instructions and agreed with Shreds explanation. Their explanations were noted.

Race 4: TOLGA MARKETS QTIS MAIDEN PLATE – 900 METRES

BRAVE EDDY – Shifted in on jumping brushing POWER SHOW and then shifted out tightening TOHUKU in between runners.
