SUPPLEMENTARY REPORT: ROCKHAMPTON, 14th OCTOBER 2010

Race 5: Come to Callaghan Park for Melbourne Cup Day Fillies & Mares Class 1 Handicap, 1100m

Trainer R. Vagg informed stewards that COCO BEWARE had pulled up well and was showing no abnormalities following the race.

Race 1: St. Peter’s School Colts, Geldings and Entires Class 1 Handicap - 1100 metres
1st – MASTER GREIG 2nd – OUR TOM CAT 3rd – MINNEAPOLIS 4th – NEDERBURG

The declaration of correct weight was delayed as Stewards viewed the patrol films to ascertain that JAYDEEANCOKE had been afforded a fair start. After taking brief statements from Jockey Hall and Trainer A. Jones and viewing official video films of the start, stewards were satisfied that JAYDEENCOKE had been afforded a fair start and declared correct weight. Subsequently, Mr Jones was advised that JAYDEENCOKE must perform to the satisfaction of the stewards in a barrier test prior to its next race start.

At the start MASTER GREIG (A. Coome) was tightened for room between NOAH’S SMILE (K. Yoneyama) and WINDSONG (K. Cross)

At approximately the 700 metres NOAH’S SMILE (K. Yoneyama) shifted out and bumped MONASHEE STAR (App. A. Taylor), then when corrected, shifted in and clipped the heels of MINNEAPOLIS (C. Beets) and blundered. Apprentice Yoneyama and his master, Mrs Hassam, were given the opportunity to view the patrol film of the incident.

Over the concluding stages OUR TOM CAT (App. C Pye) shifted ground under pressure.

NEDERBURG (D. Missen) raced wide throughout.

Race 2: Something Different Maiden Handicap - 970 metres
1st – SAINTLY DANCER 2nd – DANE KING 3rd – COTE DU RHONE 4th – GIVE IM ZA

Trainer G. Taylor was fined $100 under L.R. 70(1) for failing to declare Apprentice A. Taylor as the rider of BAGGER PENNY by the prescribed time.

Prior to the race IMMOVABLE TIBER (R. Hall), which was resuming following a lengthy spell, was examined by the Club’s veterinary surgeon and cleared to start.

IMMOVABLE TIBER (R. Hall) and SAINTLY DANCER (A. Coome) began awkwardly.

BAGGER PENNY (App. A. Taylor) was slow to begin.

DARRAFLYER (J. Stephens) raced wide until near the 700 metres.

A post-race veterinary examination of MARICOPA (App C Pye) revealed that the gelding had recovered well following the event. However, the Club’s veterinary surgeon reported that the gelding had a small amount of blood in the near side nostril and mouth that had been the result of trauma.

When questioned about the performance of MARICOPA, Apprentice Pye explained that the gelding did not race well throughout and she was of the opinion that the addition of a tongue tie to the horse’s gear may have had a bearing on the disappointing performance.

Race 3: Scrimp In Style, CQ’s Newest Magazine Class 3 Plate - 970 metres
1st – BOBERG 2nd – ROCKING MELODY 3rd – BILLY THE MOUNTAIN 4th – OLD FLAME

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow Jockey D. Philpot, the rider of BILLY THE MOUNTAIN, to view the official patrol films, with a view to lodging an objection against BOBERG (J. Stephens) being declared the winner. After viewing the films, Jockey Philpot elected not to lodge a protest and correct weight was declared.

At the start, ROCKING MELODY (App. C Pye) and OLD FLAME (App. K. Cross) bumped.

At about the 800 metres SAGHEER (M. Cant), which was racing ungenerously, shifted out momentarily, resulting in OLD FLAME (App. K. Cross) having to be steadied and shift out, taking ROCKING MELODY (App. C Pye) wider.

Jockey J. Stephens pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under A.R. 137(a) in that approaching the winning post, whilst riding his mount along, he permitted BOBERG to shift out when insufficiently clear of BILLY THE MOUNTAIN (D. Philpot), which had to be checked. Jockey Stephens was suspended from riding in races for a period to commence at midnight 16th October 2010, up to and including midnight on Saturday 23rd October 2010 (2 C.Q. meetings).

Race 4: XXXX Gold Class 1 Plate - 1500 metres
1st – MR MAGORIUM 2nd – NAIL ‘EM 3rd – BACK STAGE 4th – INDIANA

Stewards considered an objection lodged by Jockey D. Missen, the rider of NAIL ‘EM which finished second, against MR MAGORIUM (R. Hall) being declared the winner, alleging interference near the 700 metres. After taking evidence from the parties involved, viewing the official video films and considering their own observations, stewards established that near the 650 metres NAIL ‘EM shifted out with MR MAGORUIM without making any contact, then on straightening MR MAGORIUM made minor contact with NAIL ‘EM as a result of PRINCESS OF JEUNE (App. A. Taylor) shifting slightly when forward of MR MAGORIUM. Stewards were of the opinion that any interference suffered by NAIL ‘EM would not have had a material effect on the placings, dismissed the objection and correct weight was declared on the judge’s placings.

BACK STAGE (A Coome) and NAIL ‘EM began awkwardly.

At about the 800 metres NAIL ‘EM over raced for a short distance.

Close to the winning post MR MAGORIUM and NAIL ‘EM bumped.

Race 5: Bacardi Mojhito Class 5 Handicap - 1400 metres
1st – KALMAN 2nd – CANE CHAMPAGNE 3rd – GUILTY CONSCIENCE 4th – KALKIE MISS

Prior to the race trainer B. Hammond advised stewards that it was his intention that KALMAN (M. Cant) be ridden forward if possible. Public announcements were made to this effect.

In the early stages SPRINGBOK LAD (A. Coome) and NIGHT CAT (App. K. Cross) raced wide.

At about the 500 metres FUHRMIDABLE (R. Hall) shifted out to obtain clear running.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey A. Coome regarding the performance of SPRINGBOK LAD. Jockey Coome said that after beginning fairly the gelding did not travel well throughout the event or was able to lead in the usual manner. He added that when placed under pressure at about the 450 metres SPRINGBOK LAD did not respond to his riding and was disappointing. Stewards will follow-up with trainer R. Vale regarding the post-race condition of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination of SPRINGBOK LAD revealed that the gelding was slightly distressed and had an elevated heart rate.

Jockey M. Cant was fined $200 under A.R.137A (5)(a)(ii) for using his whip on KALMAN in a forehand manner on more than five occasions prior to the 100 metres.

Following the race Jockey M. Cant was afforded the opportunity to explain his riding of KALMAN. Jockey Cant said that although he had ridden the gelding forward, as instructed, KALMAN was unable to muster early speed and consequently he allowed the horse to settle where it was comfortable, in a mid to rear position. The explanation was noted.
