Stewards afforded Jockey C. Jockey Whiteley said that he had been instructed to save the horse for a run as long as possible and, with those instructions in mind, he was of the opinion that the mare would be best suited by taking up a position midfield and allowing it to finish the race off.

Stewards sought an explanation from Jockey K. Pope for the seemingly disappointing performance of IMYOURHUCKLEBERRY. Jockey Pope stated that he had been confident that the horse would make a forward showing today and he was disappointed that the gelding did not travel well; having to placed under pressure to maintain its position throughout the event and that IMYOURHUCKLEBERRY had failed to respond to his riding when placed under pressure. It was suggested that the gelding would now be sent for a spell. A post-race veterinary examination of IMYOURHUCKLEBERRY did not reveal any significant abnormalities.

NOBLE LUSTRE (B. Stewart) raced wide for the majority of the event.
BOBERG (App. C. Priest) raced wide throughout.
On returning to scale Jockey C. Whiteley reported that WE WILL ROCK had over-raced in the early stages of the race and in the straight was inclined to shift ground. Stewards sought a further explanation from Jockey Whiteley regarding the riding tactics and performance of WE WILL ROCK. Jockey Whiteley stated that the gelding had proved difficult to ride throughout the event and in the straight was wayward. Jockey Whiteley added that he had been instructed to take up a forward position if possible, however WE WILL ROCK commenced to over-race when crossed by LOVE SNACK (D. Philpot) near the 1100 metres and he was unable to hold this position due to the early speed of the race. It was observed that at approximately the 800 metres the gelding shifted out of its own accord while continuing to over-race, taking GLEN BRIGTON (App. A. Taylor) and BOBERG (App. C. Priest) wider, that near the 600 metres WE WILL ROCK was steadied from the heels of TEDIKA (D. Missen) and in the early stages of the straight he had difficulty obtaining clear running. He explained also that at approximately the 150 metres he was inconvenienced when tightened for room between SUPER CHOI (D. Simmons) and MOUNTAIN KING (App. C. McIver) which had been taken out by ANGEL FORCE (D. Craven). Jockey Whiteley stated that due to the gelding’s racing manners over the concluding stages, he was able to ride in a hands and heels manner only. A post-race veterinary examination revealed that WE WILL ROCK was displaying an elevated heart rate and respiratory levels, and it was noted that the gelding had a burst blood vessel in its offside nostril and minor lacerations to the near hind leg.
Stewards will follow-up on the condition of WE WILL ROCK and interview Trainer D. Gardiner regarding the performance at a future date, when an investigation of betting on the race has been conducted.
