OFFICIALS

Chairman of Stewards – G. Goold
Stewards – P. Zimmerman, S. Fletcher, A. Dowsett, J. Robinson

GENERAL

As apprentice jockey L. O’Donnell was absent through illness, she was replaced as per the Stewards summary. Jockey L. O’Donnell was advised that she requires a medical clearance prior to next riding.

As apprentice jockey S. Willis was absent due to transport difficulties, she was replaced as per the Stewards summary.

Stewards permitted the following overweights:
Race 2 – S. Cormack +0.5kg
Race 2 – D. Smith +1kg

Race 1: QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE – 1000m

PHIL UP – Resaddled upon arrival at the barriers. Slow to begin. Rider J. Bayliss reported that after being slow away, his mount didn’t appreciate the kickback and failed to travel comfortably at any point of the race.

TURBO TORQUE – Near the 700m, improved onto the heels of BELLOVE and had to be steadied.

BELLOVE – Raced greenly in the early stages.

Race 2: BENCHMARK 62 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 50 – 2150m

CAVE DIVER (GB) – Overraced in the early and middle stages. Apprentice rider C. Sutherland advised his instructions were to have the mare in a forward position. He added that with the addition of blinkers and a crossover noseband, the mare over-raced when in a leading position which he attributed to the step-up in distance from 1400m from his previous start and the month between runs. Trainer I. Prizeman confirmed these instructions and was reminded of obligation to advise stewards of change of tactics under AR100(1)(a). Trainer I. Prizeman further advised stewards it was his intention to review the mares current racing future. Stewards advised Trainer I. Prizeman that a warning would be placed on the mare’s poor performance. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

SACRED BULL (NZ) – Slow to begin. Leaving the 600m raced in restricted room and had to be steadied when JUST SERVED laid in under pressure. Held up for a short distance approaching the home turn. Apprentice rider L. Sykes advised stewards that in his opinion the gelding did not appreciate the synthetic racing surface and was reluctant to stretch out when placed under pressure. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings. Trainer J. Bruce, when asked to comment, advised stewards that in his opinion the gelding needs to build momentum in its races and after being held up between runners approaching the home turn, felt that SACRED BULL was then one-paced in its finishing effort. He further added that if the gelding was able to come to the outside of runners approaching the 600m, in his opinion, this may have allowed SACRED BULL to finish the race off better than what it did on this occasion.

FORUM ONE – Laid out approaching the home turn.

JUSTICE SERVED – Laid in under pressure rounding the home turn and in the home straight.

PAPAL MISS – Overraced in the early and middle stages.

WINSTON BLUE – Laid in under pressure rounding the home turn. Trainer N. Hocking was advised a warning would be placed on the horse for poor performance.

Race 3: MAIDEN PLATE – 1400m

BOOM CRUSHER – Overraced in the early stages.

SHOW 'EM NORM – Overraced in the early stages.

LILICA EBET – Slow to begin.

ROXSET – Slow to begin. Overraced in the early stages. Laid in under pressure in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a slow recovery.

ZAYA – Laid out rounding the home turn and in the home straight. Rider R. Stewart reported his mount had a tendency to race greenly in the home straight.

Race 4: BENCHMARK 65 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 53 - 1400m

Correct weight was delayed to allow time for Stewards to consider an objection lodged by T. Brooker, rider of the 2nd place getter BECAMO, against the 1st place getter LONE FORCE, ridden by C. Graham, alleging interference over the final 150m. After considering the objection, stewards found that whilst LONE FORCE did shift out and brush BECAMO approaching the 50m point, given the proximity of the incident in relation to the winning post along with the official margin of a head between the two runners, they could not be comfortably satisfied that had the interference not occurred, BECAMO would have finished in front of LONE FORCE. Stewards therefore dismissed the objection and subsequently declared correct weight on the official numbers.

BECAMO – Raced in restricted room approaching the 50m between LONE FORCE (C. Graham) and LOOSE UNIT (K. Wilson-Taylor) when LONE FORCE shifted out under pressure. Rider C. Graham was reprimanded for careless riding pursuant to AR131(a).

LOOSE UNIT – Bumped leaving the 50m.

WONFORWAZZA – Slow to begin. As the pace of the race commenced to steady, shifted wider leaving the 1100m and progressed forward to a leading position leaving the 1000m. Rider M. Hellyer reported that when the pace of the race steadied approaching the 1100m, his mount commenced to over-race. He therefore elected to allow the gelding to stride forward to a leading position, however when placed under pressure in the home straight, WONFORWAZZA failed to respond to his riding. The rider further added that in his opinion, his mount would be better suited when allowed to race in a position with cover and with a more genuine tempo than that of today’s race. Trainer M. Morrison concurred with M. Hellyer’s comments and advised stewards he would monitor the geldings recovery and report to stewards should anything come to light in the coming days.

VELOCE METEOR – Overraced in the early stages.

CHAPARRAL CHASE – Commenced to over-race approaching the 1000m when the pace of the race steadied and had to be restrained from heels. Bumped by VELOCE METEOR near the 500m. Trainer J. Mason advised that in his opinion the disappointing performance could be attributed to the gelding over-racing in the middle stages. He further added that the gelding had a slight cough after the event and that he may give consideration to removing the winkers prior to its next start. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

LONE FORCE – Laid out rounding the home turn and when under pressure in the home straight. Lost its near-fore plate.

Race 5: BENCHMARK 58 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 46 – 1100m

JUNGLE FEVER – Laid in under pressure over the final 100m.

ROARING SUCCESS – Fractious in the barriers. Slow to begin and hampered by MAYBE SMART which shifted out on jumping.

MAYBE SMART – Shifted out on jumping.

SEEYOU LATER – Laid in under pressure in the home straight. Apprentice rider L. Sykes dropped his whip approaching the winning post.

Race 6: BENCHMARK 70 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 58 – 1000m

DEMON AWARD – Shifted in on jumping and bumped with KING YOSHI.

BULSARA – Began awkwardly. Raced 3-wide throughout.

MIO SORRENTO – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Laid in under pressure in the home straight.

KING YOSHI – Shifted out on jumping and bumped with DEMON AWARD. Raced keenly in the middle stages. Raced in restricted room near the 600m. Held up rounding the home turn. Improved onto heels approaching the winning post and had to be steadied.

DARE TO SHARE – Carried wider leaving the 700m by ALBION SQUARE (GB) which commenced to over-race and shifted out to avoid heels. Raced 3-wide in the early and middle stages. Carried wider when MIO SORRENTO shifted out to improve leaving the 500m. Rider C. Sutherland was advised to exercise greater care.

ALBION SQUARE (GB) – Leaving the 500m, bumped and carried wider by MIO SORRENTO which shifted out to improve. Apprentice C. Krahnen reported that after being bumped near the 500m the gelding, in her opinion, became awkward in its action and was reluctant to stretch out in the home straight. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no significant findings.

Race 7: RATINGS BAND 0 - 55 HANDICAP - BASE RATING 45 – 1400m

The declaration of correct weight was delayed to allow for stewards to view the start of this event. Upon review of the footage and after speaking to starter D. Breed, it was established that as the start was being effected, HARCASION reared, resulting in the gelding beginning awkwardly. It was further established that MONT ROYAL, simultaneously as the start was effected, lunged forward and contacted the front of the gates. Stewards were satisfied that both horses actions occurred simultaneously to when the starter was effecting the start. Correct weight was subsequently declared.

ITZA MOTZA – Approaching the 1200m, momentarily raced in restricted room. Approaching the 800m had to be steadied from heels when over-racing.

STEP ON FIRE – Raced in restricted room rounding the home turn. Had a tendency to lay out when placed under pressure in the home straight.

IRON POWER – Approaching the 800m had to be steadied from heels when over-racing. Approaching the 600m, commenced to lay out for a short distance. Rider D. Smith pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that he used his whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m and 14 occasions in totality. Rider D. Smith’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of seven (7) days commencing midnight Monday 21 April 2025, concluding midnight Sunday 28 April 2025. In determining penalty, account was taken of his guilty plea, record and the QRIC whip penalty guidelines.

ABOVE THE SKY – Began awkwardly resulting in the rider becoming momentarily unbalanced. Approaching the 1200m, momentarily raced in restricted room. Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

PAULI – Slow to begin. Raced wide in the early and middle stages.

HARCASION – Reared as the start was effected and lost ground. Commenced to over-race near the 1200m and had to be steadied from heels. Laid in for the majority of the home straight. Trainer D. Kropp was advised a warning would be placed on HARCASION for its pre-race manners and barrier manners.

FOREBEARS – Apprentice rider C. Krahnen pleaded guilty to a charge pursuant to AR132(7)(a)(ii) in that she used her whip on 10 occasions prior to the 100m and 17 occasions in totality. Rider C. Krahnen’s license to ride in races was suspended for a period of ten (10) days commencing midnight Saturday 19 April 2025, concluding midnight Tuesday 29 April 2025. In determining penalty, account was taken of her guilty plea, record and the QRIC whip penalty guidelines.
