Gordy hopes to target winter sprints with Reggie's Boy

Former NSW sprinter Reggie’s Boy will be out to stake a claim for the North Queensland winter carnival sprints when the gelding attempts a breakthrough win for the Les Gordy stable at Townsville on Thursday.

Reggie’s Boy – a Sean Cormack mount – steps out for his sixth start in North Queensland since transferring from Gosford trainer Angela Davies.

The six-year-old was a five-time winner in the south but is yet to show his true worth in North Queensland.

Reggie’s Boy is coming off a last start fourth to the Mark Dale-trained Inching Closer in a 1300 metre Open Handicap at Townsville’s Cluden Park on January 18.

“He came up to me at a bad time for his first preparation in North Queensland as it was in the middle of the winter carnival and he couldn’t get going,” Gordy said.

“But, I really liked his first-up run here last start and he should nearly have won that day but did a few things wrong.”

Gordy has made an important gear change ahead of Reggie’s Boy second start this campaign.

“I thought he resented the tongue-tie last run so I’ve taken them off,” Gordy said.

“He grows another leg in the wet."

Reggie’s Boy has started four times on heavy tracks for two wins and a placing.

Gordy is an electrician by trade and has been training since the 2016-17 season.

He believes Reggie’s Boy has the scope to make it to the big winter sprints.

“He’s probably more suited to a 1300 metre race and he might find this a bit short,” Gordy said.

“But, it’s only a small field so they might not go as quick.

“I think he’s a handy horse who will go through to open company so we might target the winter races like the Cleveland Bay or the consolation race which I won last year with Demon Award.”

Gordy has sent former Victorian Demon Award to Sunshine Coast trainer Darryl Hansen for a brief campaign before he returns for the North Queensland winter races.

“I want to spell him down there and it’s been a genius move to send him to Darryl with all the rain we’ve had,” Gordy said.

“He’ll only have a couple of runs for Darryl then he’ll spell and come back for the winter carnivals here.”
