Savour The Dream with Sydney targets

An ambitious Sydney autumn campaign awaits talented colt Savour The Dream if he’s successful at Doomben on Saturday.

Savour The Dream – a Martin Harley mount – will be out to repeat his stunning last start Eagle Farm win when he steps out for only his seventh start in the QTIS Three-Year-Old Handicap over 1600 metres.

Savour The Dream, an $180,000 buy at the New Zealand Karaka sales, was ridden patiently and was allowed to get well back at Eagle Farm before rattling home for a near two length win.

Trainer Bevan Laming and son Richard have their sights on the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and Group 1 Rosehill Guineas next month and haven’t ruled out returning for the Queensland Racing Carnival in the winter.

“He went into his last win at Eagle Farm a run underdone so it was very good to see him winning,” Richard Laming said.

“There’s plenty of upside to this horse and if he can win again, we’re looking at sending him to Sydney for the Randwick and Rosehill Guineas.

“He’s also nominated for the Australian Derby and the Queensland Derby here at home.”

'Team Laming' never considered claiming and had no hesitation in retaining Harley despite the colt's big weight of 60.5kgs.

“He’s got roughly the same weight as last time and we believe good horses need good riders,” Richard Laming said.

Richard Laming won’t tie down Harley to any specific instructions after he drew barrier 10.

“I’ll let Martin decide how to ride him after he allowed him to drop out last start,” Richard Laming said.

“It will be the same tactics again this time.”

Savour The Dream has shown every indication he’ll stay and Richard Laming is confident he has a bright future as a stayer.

“He’s out of a Savabeel mare so he should stay,” Richard Laming said.   

His dam Savvy Dreams was placed in a New Zealand Oaks in 2017.

The Lamings have stables in two states with 30 horses at the Gold Coast and 20 at their Cranbourne base.

Although Savour The Dream hasn’t raced for a month, he had a tick over barrier trial at the Gold Coast when he ran second on January 28.

“It was a soft trial when he ran second and he should run very well again on Saturday,” Richard Laming said.
