GENERAL
Race 8 – GOOD PHILLY – As Apprentice B. Wheeler was overweight, he was subsequently replaced by Jockey G. Cartwright. Apprentice B. Wheeler was fined $200 pursuant to AR 190(3) for accepting a ride when overweight.
Race 1: XXXX SIDELINE BEER GARDEN 3 MAY QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD FILLIES MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
BARBIELAND – Raced keenly during the early stages. Raced greenly over the concluding stages when placed under pressure.
EDITING – Began awkwardly, shifted out and bumped KABUKICHO.
FAST FUN – Raced greenly when placed under pressure during the early stages of the home straight.
KABUKICHO – Began awkwardly, shifted in and bumped EDITING. Raced keenly during the early stages. Forced wider leaving the 700m when FREEDOM TO ROAM shifted out and raced wide from that point onwards. Had a tendency to lay in during various stages of the final 600m. Inconvenienced over the final 150m.
LILY'S DASH – Had a tendency to shift out under pressure over the final 150m. Apprentice C. Collis was advised to stop and straighten his mount when he commences to shift ground.
Race 2: GALLOPERS SPORTS CLUB QTIS THREE-YEAR-OLD COLTS AND GELDINGS MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
ABENDER – Bumped after the start.
CERONS – Raced wide throughout. Laid out rounding the home turn. When questioned regarding tactics adopted during the early stages, Jockey D. Thornton stated that his intentions were to settle in a forward position with cover, but after his mount didn’t show early gate speed, he elected to try to obtain cover in a midfield position, however was unable to do so and was obliged to race three wide with cover. Jockey D. Thornton further added his mount failed to handle today’s track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
PARO – Shortly after the start had its hind quarters bumped by RUINS OF ROME.
RUINS OF ROME – Shortly after the start, became unbalanced after contacting the hind quarters of PARO. Raced greenly under pressure over the concluding stages.
SHAQUE D'AMOUR – Shifted in on jumping and bumped ABENDER. Raced wide throughout.
SPELLHOUND – Began awkwardly. Raced wide throughout.
Following the running of this race, the track was upgraded to a Heavy 8.
Race 3: SKY RACING QTIS TWO-YEAR-OLD MAIDEN PLATE 1200 M
The start of this race was delayed after CARBONARA was fractious in the barriers and obtained abrasions on its head region and was subsequently declared a late scratching on veterinary advice at 1:14pm. Prior to the declaration of correct weight, Stewards declared all successful bets placed on CARBONARA to be refunded with the following deductions to apply.
1st place – COOL ARCHIE 15c win, 7c place.
2nd place – CALL DA VINCI 18c place
3rd place – FIND ME 20c place.
Trainer R. Heathcote was advised CARBONARA would require a further barrier certificate prior to resuming.
CALL DA VINCI – Raced greenly rounding the home turn when placed under pressure. Jockey J. Byrne reported his mount raced greenly for the majority of the event.
COOL ARCHIE – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after dislodging a juvenile tooth and was subsequently cleared to start. Shifted out on jumping. Raced wide throughout.
HEADSTRONG – Began awkwardly.
SUMMIT – Slow to begin. Leaving the 900m had to be steadied after improving onto the heels of LACEYLACE which lost ground when racing greenly.
LACEYLACE – Leaving the 900m when racing greenly, shifted out despite the efforts of its rider.
NEWEVA – Began awkwardly. Leaving the 900m, crowded for room and had to be steadied when LACEYLACE shifted out. Raced wide from the 700m. Momentarily inconvenienced rounding the home turn when CALL DA VINCI shifted wider to improve.
Race 4: MAGIC MILLIONS NATIONAL SALE IN MAY RATINGS BAND 0 - 65 HANDICAP 1110 M
ALPHA BRAVO – Shifted out under pressure leaving the 150m. Stewards questioned Apprentice J. Hampson regarding her tactics adopted on ALPHA BRAVO, particularly in the middle stages. Apprentice J. Hampson stated that her that her instructions were to race in a forward position. She added that she was mindful TOP BIRD would also be in a forward position and would most likely lead the event. She further added that she was not aware of the margin that both her and TOP BIRD had established on the rest of the field in the middle stages and in hindsight, she should have restrained earlier than she did to allow TOP BIRD to progress forward of her. Stewards concurred with Apprentice J. Hampson in that she should have begun restraining earlier than she did, however when taking into account her experience and status as an Apprentice, Stewards elected to take the matter no further other than to remind Apprentice J. Hampson that she must make every effort to ride her mounts in a competitive manner within their capabilities.
LANTAU ISLAND – Slow to begin. Leaving the 900m, had to be steadied from heels. Approaching the 500m, laid in for a short distance. Had a tendency to lay in when placed under pressure in the home straight.
ARDERN – Began awkwardly. Raced wide for the majority.
TOP BIRD – Shifted out whilst weakening leaving the 150m.
Race 5:LADBROKES FAST WITHDRAWALS BENCHMARK 68 HANDICAP 2020 M
PEROVIC – Raced keenly during the early stages.
MANNERHEIM – Laid in under pressure over the concluding stages.
SIGN OF PEACE (NZ) – Raced keenly during the early stages. Leaving the 1300m, blundered and clipped the heels of CHILLAXING (IRE) when that runner shifted in. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
CHILLAXING (IRE) – Commenced to lay in approaching the 1300m and shifted in despite the efforts of its rider, causing SIGN OF PEACE (NZ) to be checked. Trainer T. Gollan was advised CHILLAXING (IRE) would have a warning placed on the gelding’s racing manners after hanging in and proving difficult to ride. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
HE'S A SAINT (NZ) – Apprentice B. Wheeler reported his mount was inclined to hang throughout the event and when asked for an effort, proved disappointing. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
HILLCREST AVENUE (IRE) – Stewards permitted Apprentice C. Collis to only claim 1kg of his 2kg allowance. Raced three wide until approaching the 1200m. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
Race 6: BUSY AT WORK NATIONAL APPRENTICE RACE SERIES QTIS C,G&E CLASS 1 PLATE 1350 M
CHO OYU – Laid out under pressure approaching the 100m.
LIVALITTLE (NZ) – Began awkwardly.
LET'SGO HUGO – Shifted out on jumping. Laid out rounding the home turn.
SANCTUARY STORM – Began awkwardly and hampered after the start. Raced greenly under pressure leaving the 200m.
JUDGE JACK – Raced wide throughout. Shifted in under pressure approaching the 150m, obliging its rider to stop and straighten. Apprentice C. Wells was advised by Stewards that she needed to stop and straighten her mount earlier than she did on this occasion. Apprentice C. Wells was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(b) for failing to ride her mount out to the finishing line. Stewards when considering penalty took into account Ms C. Wells status as an Apprentice and her limited experience riding at Doomben.
ORIENTE – Shifted out on jumping. Raced wide throughout. Stewards questioned Apprentice L. Campbell regarding his riding over the final stages of the event, Apprentice L. Campbell acknowledged that he misjudged the signage on the infield as the winning post and as a result failed to ride his mount out approaching the finish for two strides before realising his error. Apprentice L. Campbell was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(b) for this incident. Stewards when considering penalty took into account Mr Campbell’s status as an Apprentice, that this was his first time riding at the Doomben course, his forthright evidence and also that in the opinion of Stewards, his actions did not cost ORIENTE finishing in first position.
MAZIS – Shifted out under pressure in the home straight.
Race 7: RANVET NATIONAL APPRENTICE RACE SERIES QTIS F&M CLASS 1 PLATE 1350 M
SINGLE 'N' READY – Bumped near the 600m by CAXTON LASS which was taken in by KETTLEBELL. Steadied on entering the home straight when PRETTY RHO shifted out to improve. Apprentice L. Campbell rider of PRETTY RHO was reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for this incident. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be displaying clinical signs of the thumps.
GREY IMPACT – Began awkwardly.
TEESANDCEES APPLY – Began awkwardly and lost ground.
CAXTON LASS – Commenced to over race and had to be steadied from heels approaching the 1000m. Steadied from heels near the 800m. Near the 600m, bumped heavily by KETTLEBELL which shifted in. Apprentice O. Kendal rider of KETTLEBELL was severely reprimanded pursuant to AR 131(a) for careless riding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
SOUTHERN CHARM – Raced wide throughout.
KETTLEBELL – Raced wide throughout. Forced wider near the 700m. Near the 600m, bumped with CAXTON LASS. Leaving the 200m, Apprentice O. Kendal dropped her near side rein and had some difficulty regathering until the 100m.
PRETTY RHO – Slow to begin. Laid out under pressure in the home straight.
Following the running of Race 7, Apprentice B. Wheeler was stood down by the club doctor after complaining of pain in his left ankle. Apprentice B. Wheeler was advised he would require a medical clearance prior to resuming.
Race 8 - XXXX QTIS 3YO QUALITY FILLIES HANDICAP 1350 M
SUN WORSHIPPER – Near the 800m raced in restricted room and had to be steadied when awkwardly placed at the heels of AUTUMNGIRL.
DATA SCRAMBLE – Raced wide throughout.
LA COMETA (NZ) – Approaching the 1100m, obliged to steady and shift wider after improving onto the heels of DATA SCRAMBLE which was being restrained in an effort to obtain cover.
Following this race, the track was upgraded to a Soft 7.
Race 9 - LADBROKES MATES MODE POTS QUALITY HANDICAP 1350 M
SINAWANN (IRE) – Underwent a pre-race veterinary examination after contacting the rail when leaving the enclosure and was subsequently cleared to start. Jockey J. Byrne reported it was not his intention to race in a forward position, however after beginning well, the gelding commenced to race keenly and elected to allow his mount to stride forward.
ENCODER – As Apprentice B. Wheeler was stood down, he was subsequently replaced by Jockey D. Thornton.
AT WITZ END – Commenced to over race near the 900m.
DEVASTATE (NZ) – Raced wide throughout.
SET TO SHINE – Began awkwardly.
DON'T STOP – Improved onto heels approaching the winning post and had to be steadied.
