GENERAL
Due to the 1000m chute being unsuitable for racing, races 2 and 3 over 1000m were started from the course proper.

Race 1: GO TRANSIT MEDIA GROUP MAIDEN PLATE                 2200 Metres

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination revealed gelding to be displaying clinical signs of the thumps.

SASSY TAP (NZ) – Near the 1500m, when the pace of the race slackened rider R. Dolan allowed the mare to stride forward. Near the 200m, when tiring, raced in restricted room.

SHAMIELA – Change of tactics – connections advised that the mare will attempt to be ridden with cover. Settled further forward than expected due to the slow tempo and the mare racing keenly.  Near the 1900m, raced keenly and steadied from the heels of CROC FIGHT.

Race 2: PROLIQUOR MAIDEN PLATE               1000 Metres

The start of this event was delayed approximately 3 minutes when TEELG reared and got its head awkwardly positioned on top of its starting gate, which took a short time to resolve. The gelding was removed from the barriers, underwent a veterinary examination and was cleared to start. Stewards subsequently interviewed veterinary surgeon Dr S. McGinness, official starter D. Breed, jockey B. Thornton regarding the actions he took in attempting to free TEELG, and barrier attendant C. Eyles, who was also attempting to assist jockey Thornton to release TEELG. Stewards when considering the evidence tendered acknowledged that jockey Thornton had used his foot to push the horse’s head down to assist the barrier attendant in order to free TEELG’s head and on review of the film Stewards were satisfied that his actions were not to strike TEELG. Stewards noted the circumstances. A post race veterinary examination revealed no apparent abnormalities.
