RACE 1: Perry Homes Class 2 H’Cap – 2200m
1st: More Than A Rose 2nd: Whakatane 3rd: Montezuma 4th: St James Square
NO MAGIC NEEDED – Attempted to buck in the early stages of the event and lost ground. Jockey D. Griffin reported that notwithstanding the gelding’s racing manners in the early stages he was disappointed in its performance, as it improved into the race as expected leaving the 700m however, peaked on its run upon straightening. A swab sample was taken. A post race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be suffering from heat stress.
M. Hellyer (WHAKATANE) was reprimanded for excessive use of the whip prior to the 100m.
RACE 2: Perry Homes Maiden Plate – 2200m
1st: Mr Malu 2nd: Dubleo’s Lad 3rd: Sir Rotheway 4th: Moment of Silence
SURFERS DOLPHINS – Slow to begin. When questioned regarding the tactics adopted in commencing to improve around the field leaving the 1300m App N. Masuda stated that rounding the turn near the 1400m he was in a trailing position one off the fence behind SIR ROTHEWAY. As SIR ROTHEWAY did not appear to be travelling well at that point he elected to shift wider to improve his position. App Masuda stated that it was his intention to then shift back in to obtain a trailing position behind MR MALU down the back straight however, SIR EARLSTOUN commenced to improve to his inside which left him in a 3 wide position passing the 900m. App Masuda further stated that for this reason he allowed the mare to continue to stride forward to eventually settle outside MR MALU passing the 700m. Stewards advised App Masuda that he had erred in failing to secure a trailing position behind SIR EARLSTOUN after improving forward of SIR ROTHEWAY near the 1200m.

Jockey Looker added that in the early stages he anticipated that GO BETTER would be able to obtain a position on the fence which would have left him in a position to the outside of that runner trailing IT’S VEGAS BABY. However, when MISS SUGAR PUSS improved to the inside of GO BETTER he was placed in a 3 wide position and therefore elected to restrain to obtain cover behind GO BETTER, which resulted in him racing further back than anticipated. Stewards accepted the explanation.
