______________________________
Race 1: Butler McDermott Lawyers Open H'cap – 2200m
On return to scale a protest was lodged by jockey J. Byrne, rider of the 3rd placegetter, LANDLOCKED, against VOLKHERE being declared 2nd alleging interference over the final 250m and also a breach of the whip rule by M. McGillivray, rider of VOLKERE. On the evidence it was established that VOLKERE shifted out and brushed LANDLOCKED passing the 150m, however stewards did not believe that this interference had a material effect on the placings. Furthermore, it was established that jockey McGillivray did use his whip in excess of the permitted number of occasions, however bearing in mind the half length margin, stewards did not believe that this breach materially affected the placings and dismissed the protest and declared correct weight.
ONGOING VENTURE - Restrained away from heels when the pace steadied near the 1900m.
ALAKRIS – Obliged to steady away from heels near the 1800m. Jockey J. Taylor then elected to push forward to take up a position in the lead near the 1500m. When questioned regarding the reason for him shifting off the fence when leading from the 600m, which allowed SHOTOVER RIVER, the winner, to improve to his inside, jockey J. Taylor explained it was his intention to shift wider approaching and rounding the home turn as it was his view that when the rail was in the true position racing towards the middle of the track is more advantageous. Stewards noted the explanation.
VOLKERE – Apprentice M. McGillivray advised that his mount did not muster speed from the barriers and as a result he had to ride vigorously to take up a forward position. Apprentice M. McGillivray was fined $400 for using his whip 9 times prior to the 100m.
SHOTOVER RIVER - Apprentice L. Dittman was cautioned for reducing the pace of the race excessively approaching and passing the 1800m when leading, which resulted in interference to runners following.
