Race 3: Coastline BMW 7 Series H'cap – 1200m

After viewing stewards’ footage of the start of this event it was established VINTAGE MOSS (B. Stower) and CRAIGLEA CRUZ (J. Orman), which were drawn in adjoining stalls, had jumped from incorrect barriers. After questioning apprentice B. Stower and apprentice J. Orman it was established on entering the barriers both apprentices raised concerns with barrier staff that they felt they were being led into the incorrect barriers, however these concerns were not addressed with the starter or assistant starter. After considering the evidence, stewards could not attribute blame to either rider, and starter, Mr R .Hansen, was instructed to inform barrier staff in future that if any rider raised concerns in relation to their barriers, those concerns are to be directed through the starter or assistant starter. Stewards also felt that this error had not materially affected the horse’s finishing positions and no further action was taken.

CAPTAIN’S PICK – As J. Hull was to be overweight, G. Colless was substituted as the rider of the horse. Hung out throughout. J. Hull was fined $100. Connections were advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily in an official trial prior to its next race start. Stewards scrutinised the whip use of jockey G. Colless in this event. Stewards were satisfied that his whip use was warranted due to the manner in which the horse was hanging and that it was reasonable in order to prevent his mount shifting wider on the track.
GENERAL COS – Trainer C. Allardyce was reprimanded for presenting the horse late on course.

LADY SOLEMO – Bucked soon after the start and was restrained by its rider and took no competitive part in the race. Trainer R. Cameron was advised that the horse must trial satisfactorily prior to its next race start.

GID UP STROP – Stewards asked apprentice J. Orman to comment on the performance of the horse. He indicated he was disappointed, however felt that the performance could be attributed to the horse having its first start this preparation over 1400m, on a rain-affected track, and from the wide barrier he was forced to settle at the rear of the field. He added that when asked for an effort from the 600m, his mount did not respond to his riding. Trainer R. Heathcote agreed the apprentice Orman’s comments.

Race 8: Coastline BMW X6M QTIS 3yo H'cap – 1200m

MILITARY MISS – Slow to begin. A post race veterinary examination revealed mild soreness in the near foreleg.

J. Lloyd was suspended from riding in races for a period covered by 9 days, to commence at midnight, 24 January and to expire at midnight, 2 February. Raced wide without cover.
